A Tribute to Mothers
We celebrate Mother's Day in May. The love of a mother is truly something special. In fact, the Bible places it next to the love of God.
Can a woman forget her nursing child
And have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Isaiah 49:15
As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you. Isaiah 66:13
A mother's love begins before birth
Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. John 16:21
In a famous decision by Solomon, the Bible tells of a mother who would rather give up her baby than see it hurt:
The king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other. Then the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for she was deeply stirred over her son and said, Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him. But the other said, He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him! Then the king said, Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him. She is his mother. 1 Kings 3:25-27
Paul compares his care for the Thessalonians to a mother's love
But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. 1 Thess 2:7
Respecting your mother's instruction and guidance is the first commandment with a promise
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you. Exodus 20:12
Hear, my son, your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. Proverbs 1:8
Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Let your father and your mother be glad, and let her rejoice who gave birth to you. Proverbs 23:22,25
A wayward child is a burden to a mother:
A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother. Proverbs 10:1
The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother. Proverbs 29:15
He who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
He who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. Exodus 21:15,17
A mother has tremendous influence for good, or bad
For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. 2 Timothy 1:5
He did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. 1 Kings 22:52
A faithful Christian mother is pleasing to the Lord
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31:30-31
God used a mother to send the greatest gift of all to us
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4-5
Mothers, thank you for all you do!
